The Google Guarantee: How the Badge Works and How to Get It in 2026

The Google Guarantee was a verification program that earned local service businesses a green check badge inside their Google Local Service Ads (LSAs).

While this badge is now consolidated with others into a single Google Verified program, everything that made the Google Guarantee badge remains the same: the eligibility, screening steps, top-of-page placement, and more.

Marketing Done Right can set up and manage your Google Verified and Local Service Ads for you. We’ll handle your verification paperwork, lead disputes, and weekly lead-quality monitoring, while you focus on what you do best: running and growing your business.

What Is the Google Guarantee? (and What Changed in 2025)

The Google Guaranteed badge was a verification credential indicating that a business passed Google’s license, insurance, and background checks. It earned them a green check that appeared on its LSA at the very top of SERPs, above traditional Google Ads and the map pack.

The Transition From Google Guarantee to Google Verified

On October 20, 2025, Google officially retired the Google Guarantee badge, alongside these credentials:

  • Google Screened
  • License Verified
  • Money Back Guarantee

The company consolidated all four into a single blue Google Verified badge to simplify its verification program.

Existing advertisers didn’t have to do anything to get it. If a business completed its verification requirements before October 2025, the new badge was automatically applied, and its ads kept running. Ranking mechanics, lead delivery, and billing continued to operate exactly as before.

Meanwhile, new advertisers must complete Google’s LSA screening and verification process to earn their badge.

What the Money-Back Guarantee Retirement Means for Advertisers

Under the old Money Back Guarantee program, dissatisfied customers may file a claim, and Google will reimburse them at its discretion, up to a lifetime cap of $2,000 in the United States and Canada.

Google retired this program alongside Google Guaranteed, Google Screened, and License Verified. It accepted reimbursement requests only for services booked before December 7 of the same year and only within 30 days of the initial service completion date.

If your script or website still includes the retired badges, now’s the time to remove them to avoid any confusion from your clients or customers. Replace it with a Google Verified badge, which proves your business passed Google’s background, license, and insurance checks. It gives your target customers a verifiable trust signal.

Who Qualifies for the Google Verified Badge

Eligibility depends on three factors: your service category, location or service area, and documentation.

Eligible Service Categories

Google runs the Google Verified program across several categories, which can be broken down into:

  • Auto care (tire shop, car wash)
  • Beauty (hair salon, tattoo studio)
  • Food and beverage (restaurant, coffee shop)
  • Healthcare (dentist, chiropractor)
  • Home services (carpenters, HVAC technicians)
  • Learning (driving instructor, preschool)
  • People care (child care, funeral home)
  • Pet care (animal rescue, pet adoption)
  • Professional services (lawyer, real estate agent)
  • Wellness (massage therapists, yoga studio)
  • Miscellaneous (storage, insurance agency)

Availability also depends on your location, so it’s best to check Google’s official list to confirm your eligibility before building a budget for LSAs.

License, Insurance, and Background Check Requirements

Google’s screening and verification process varies by service category and region. It may also include background, business registration, insurance, and license checks. In practice, this means you may need:

  • Background checks on the business owner and, in certain categories, all fieldworkers who enter a customer’s property
  • Business registration or license covering every area you serve
  • General or professional liability insurance meeting or exceeding Google’s coverage
  • Google Business Profile (GBP) linked to your Local Services Ads account

Be sure to renew your licenses or insurance certificates on time to prevent your Google Verified badge from disappearing after approval.

How to Get the Google Verified Badge Step by Step

To become Google Verified, you’ll need to undergo a risk-based verification process from Google.

Setting up Local Services Ads

Google map app icon
  1. Claim and verify your GBP: It’s a core requirement for getting your badge.
  2. Check Your Eligibility: Visit the Local Services Ads sign-up page and enter your ZIP code and primary category to determine if you qualify.
  3. Enter Business Details and Service Area: Be sure to enter only applicable locations to prevent leads outside your service area from coming in.
  4. Upload Your License and Insurance Certificate: Names must match your GBP exactly to avoid any problems.
  5. Complete Background Checks: Google runs these through third-party screening vendors for the business owner and field staff.
  6. Submit and Wait: Your profile will go live once verification clears.

The Screening and Verification Timeline

Allow 2 to 5 weeks from submission of the requirements to approval.

It also helps to know that Google evaluates some advertisers based on signals it already holds, thereby qualifying them for accelerated verification. Then, they have 14 days to complete the remaining steps.

If your first application is rejected, you have a 30-day window to correct and submit your documents. Fail the second attempt, and you face a one-year lockout.

Why Applications Get Rejected

Most rejections involve problems with the submitted paperwork. Consider reviewing these factors to avoid rejection and wasting time waiting for reapplications.

  • Mismatched Names: Your business license, insurance documents, and GBP must all display the same legal business name, including its structure (e.g., LLC).
  • Insufficient Coverage: Your general or professional liability policy must meet the minimum requirements for your category. Also, your insurance certificate needs to name the service categories you’re applying under.
  • Incomplete Field Staff Checks: Google needs to screen all of its field technicians. Miss one, and you’re subject to rejection.
  • Service Area Overreach: Claiming ZIP codes that your license doesn’t cover triggers a red flag. Beyond rejection, this practice also misleads potential customers, damaging trust in your brand.

How Much Do Google Verified and Local Service Ads Cost

There is no monthly fee for the badge itself. Meanwhile, LSA operates on a pay-per-lead model; you only pay when a customer calls, messages, or books through your ad.

Pay-Per-Lead Pricing

SearchLight Digital provides a benchmark for LSA pricing in the home services industry. It tracked $6.72 million in LSA spend across 888 contractors and 126,650 leads in February 2026.

It also found that the average cost per lead (CPL) was $53 for most home service categories; electrical came in lowest at $39, HVAC at $51, and plumbing at $57.

Budgeting and Dispute Credits

Keep in mind, not every charged lead is an opportunity. A separate benchmark study by SearchLight found that roughly 37% of raw LSA conversions were duplicate or repeat touches.

You can dispute invalid callers, existing customers, and vendor spam to earn a credit. However, it means you’ll have to review your lead log every week.

Google Verified (LSAs) vs. Google Ads vs. Google Business Profile

These three components are crucial to keeping your presence on Google productive. Let’s go over what each of them features to help you understand them better.

When to Run LSA, Google Ads, or Both

You can run LSAs plus a fully optimized GBP as your baseline. Doing so lets you capture the top of SERPs and the map pack, while your GBP feeds the reviews that push your LSA ranking.

Then, layer Google Ads once your lead flow becomes stable and predictable. It’s at this point that you need to reach beyond your LSA category, gain control over messaging, or secure coverage for services that LSA doesn’t include.
